Thurber is great. I've been meaning to get some of his stuff to share with my kids, and keep forgetting. Shame on me!
Back in college I was looking through a book on the history of dueling, and there was an old b&w photo from the 1800's, in which two French guys were dueling with sabers.
The loser's head was lying on the ground, with the winner looking down at it.
The story is that when the idea for this cartoon came in Harold Ross said that Thurber should draw it because his characters did not bleed.
So, I do not really think this will work.
Quite effective info, thank you for this post.
Quite helpful piece of writing, thank you for this article.
I am thoroughly convinced in this said post. I am currently searching for ways in which I could enhance my knowledge in this said topic you have posted here
Thurber's truely the greatest cartonist and therefor also an artist for the artists, one can not help getting influenced by his work and dry sense of humour, also check out J.Lennon's cartoons of which he said they were "thurized".Thanx for sharing this...jan.van.marcke@telenet.be
The original of this cartoon used to hang in the front hallway of Nicholas Murray, a famous photographer and fencer. I suppose Thurber gave it to Murray after a photo shoot? (I dated his daughter Mimi for a spell.) I wonder where it is now?
